Experience

The Hohlen family sewer business started back in 1955 when my grandfather Ted created Hohlen Construction.

My father Butch (Gerald) Hohlen continued the family sewer business as Hohlen Excavation and Sewer (L187) in 1970 when he came back from his second tour in Vietnam. Then my grandparents started Hohlen Dairy Equipment, helping local farm families, thus all of us! They retired in 1990.

I was born into a construction family and worked in and around the family sewer, excavation and construction trades all my life. I had four different paper routes before my teens. I started doing carpentry, roofing, siding, etc. at age 16. I went on my own at age 24 (1999) with my carpentry crew. I got my Builders/Remodelers license 2006 and my Home Inspection Certificate in 2012.

I always knew that I was going to continue the family septic business. I look forward to helping you and your family. Thank you and you’re welcome!

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Statement for Soil Verification?

Soil verification is required for new structures, like a house, garage, driveway, etc. Also for a new septic treatment system. Because if the soil can’t support either or anything, whomever will want to choose a different location!

Why do I need to inspect my home?

A Home Inspection Is For The Home! Not the realtor, seller, buyer! Having your home inspected not only helps you stay ahead maintenance issues, but it also helps you get to know your home.

What are the classification of a bedroom in regards to Septic System Designs and sizing of the treatment areas?

There are seven requirements that define a bedroom:

  • Minimum 70 SQ’
  • Minimum of 84″ floor to ceiling (rough framing)
  • Emergency Enter/Exit (Egress)
  • Heat Source
  • 1 Electrical Outlet (operating)
  • Closet
  • Door

You must have ALL seven! Smoke/carbon monoxide detectors are required in ALL rooms that are slept in, plus living room, den, four-season porch, unfinished basement, etc.

What is ASHI Home Inspection Certification?

When you choose ASHI, you’ll be working with professional home inspectors who have passed the most rigorous technical examinations in effect today, including inspectors who are required to perform more than 250 professional inspections before they’re even allowed to call themselves ”certified”. No other professional society can match the credentials of an ASHI inspector.

Which areas do you serve?

We’ll drive a long way for the right job, and we’ve worked all over the tri-state area, but our top ten towns are Zimmerman, Clearwater, Clear Lake, Princeton, St. Cloud, Onamia, Cambridge, Elk River, Milaca and Little Falls.

What types of tasks are you willing or required to perform?

No Electrical = l am not a licensed electrician. Or Subcontract to a licensed electrician.

Excavated soils will be back filled and leveled out/off.
Extra soils will be left on site. $ = to leave the site.

No landscaping. Or Subcontract to a landscaping company. Owner responsible for seeding the soil to prevent erosion.

Deposit Required for all septic installations! 70% to 100% of estimated invoice! Balance Due at the time of installation inspection/backfill!

**Manhole covers will be elevated, like a pitcher’s mound on a baseball field. Or 6″-12″ riser above ground.
Examples can be found on the gallery page.

Private locate is owner’s responsibility.

Septic System Repair vs. Replacement?

Compliance Inspection

Repairs are always less expensive than a replacement!

True Story! Owner went into his own existing septic tank, to reattach the outlet baffle! We pumped and cleaned it first! He suited up! WOW!!!
His first sale showing was the next morning. Some people would have failed the tank, needing a new one!
Hundreds VS Thousands!

If the Septic Tank is good and soil is good! I am more than willing to repair/update the Septic System vs fail it!

Some people who are inexperienced in the FIELD might fail a good repairable system!

Septic System Compliance: What’s in it for me?

Compliance Criteria

FYI! Having a Compliant Septic System at the time of Sale is the best way to be sure it will sell efficient and fast.

If owner wants a possible discount on their compliance invoice? They are required to provide contractor with existing/current septic system documentation. Email, paper copy.

Example 2 – Previous soil logs on 1 drain field. No more need to be done on that same drain field.

Non-Compliance has a discount. Non-Compliance, Septic Design, and Septic Installation package discount.

All Homes should have a “Home File” for every Home. Shoe box works great, utility room.

Helps owners, buyers, sellers, contractors, and their representatives!
